Sand Sculpting Australia
“CREEPY CRAWLIES”
In January 2008, after 7 years on the Rye foreshore, Sand Sculpting Australia relocated to an exciting new venue - the Frankston Waterfront. With Frankston beach, the pier and Kananook Creek as a backdrop, the area was transformed as 3,500 tonnes of sand was carved into scenes from favourite childhood ‘Fairytales & Fables’ from around the world. In the following summers, Sand Sculpting Australia brought 'Dinostory' and 'Great Moments in History' to the Waterfront for a 4 month period. They are currently preparing their newest and biggest event yet, 'Creepy Crawlies'.
Once again invitations will be sent to the world’s best sculptors - from the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and the UK, to Russia, Singapore, Canada and the USA - to join with their Aussie workmates to form a team of 20 artists. These creative and very talented people will work tirelessly for nearly 3 weeks to bring into being enormous yet finely detailed and lifelike sculptures that show the weird and wonderful world of Creepy Crawlies. From beetles, bugs and butterflies, to spiders, slugs and scorpions, the tiny creatures that inhabit our lives will be magnified and amplified in giant sand sculptures. Delicate dragonflies and enchanting ladybirds will mingle with bed bugs, fleas and other things that make you itch and your skin crawl!
Integrated with the sand sculptures will be activities to keep the whole family entertained. Try your hand at sand sculpting in the Workshop area, or learn more about the art by attending a talk by the resident sculptor.
During school holidays and on weekends and public holidays, there will be many more activities available including Sand Art and Sand Bottles, as well as roving entertainers.
Please note that this event is family oriented and child friendly, therefore it is a smoke free venue and alcohol is not permitted. Likewise, dogs are not permitted within the exhibition (guide dogs, hearing guide dogs and guide dogs in training excepted).
